These words, also called the “Doxology”, were written in 1674 by Thomas Ken as the final verse of two hymns, "Awake, my soul, and with the sun" and "Glory to thee, my God, this night," intended for morning and evening worship at Winchester College. This final verse, separated from its proper hymns and sung to the tune here of Geneva Psalter (attributed in many hymnals to Louis Bourgeois), traditionally marked the dedication of alms or offerings at Sunday worship. Since repeated weekly in traditional services, most of the congregation memorized it and no hymn number (or in modern times, video) is ever referenced. Using traditional song liturgy has gone out of style in modern worship services, but it is still used in some services. On an interesting note, students at Goshen College stood and sang the doxology when 6:06 remained in a soccer game—as long as Goshen was winning the game.
